University of Southern Queensland, Toowoomba, Qld.
This portfolio contains a range of photographs taken, in some instances, near the natural sunset to capture the mystical and symbolic nature of the conceptual ideas behind Flora Line and her Friend.
2025
Sculpture was included in the second half of the Yearlong VIS1012 Visual Arts Course at UNIsq.
Soft Sculpture
Soft Sculpture built around a solid armature.
Flora Line is a fully jointed soft sculpture created from repurposed materials and built over a three-part internal armature. She is part deer for grace, part butterfly for agility, and part bird for song. Within her chest she carries a small music box that plays a lullaby she uses to settle the animals of the forest into sleep. Around her neck hangs a set of keys — symbolic tools she uses to gently lock away the lost dreams and hurts of her forest friends, keeping them safe until they are ready to return to them. Her small shoulder bag holds handmade beads created from the dirt gathered from the four corners of the forest, collected as she checks the borders to make sure her woodland world remains safe and peaceful.
Flora Line is not alone. Her companion — a second sculpture standing beside her — is part horse, with the wings of an eagle, a creature built for grounding and protection. Where Flora Line is gentle, he is steadfast. Where she comforts, he shields. Together they represent the truth that even in imagined worlds, support is powerful, and no one must journey through fear or memory alone. Both figures are fully wired, even down to their fingers, allowing them to move, gesture, and navigate the forest with ease. This flexibility and expressiveness echo the emotional agility required to heal from trauma.
Conceptually, Flora Line comes from the understanding that when life becomes overwhelming or traumatic, it is okay — and sometimes necessary — to retreat to a safe inner landscape. In this imagined forest, Flora Line represents the inner guardian who offers refuge, calm, and protection. Her companion symbolises strength that stands quietly beside you when things feel impossible. Together, they embody the idea that healing often begins in the places inside us where imagination, safety, and emotional support can coexist. Flora Line lives a quiet, fulfilled life within this world — a representation of how self-created sanctuary can help transform pain into gentleness and resilience.
